Chapter Seven
She was right. I didnât like it. Not one little bit. But I didnât have any other ideas and time was runninâ out.
The bond I shared with Dash, the one Iâd closed off when he went off to the Swamp and left me high and dry, was fading fast. And the one I had with Eppie was little more than a flicker. I had to do something, and I had to do right that second, if not sooner.
If anyone other than Portia had come up with the plan, I wouldâve laughed and said, âWhat the hell.â Unfortunately, it was the Pink pain in the ass whoâd though it up and I knew if we made it out alive, Iâd never hear the end of it.
âItâs worth it. Itâs worth it. Itâs worth it. Gotta save Dash. Gotta save Eppie. Gotta save them all. Itâs worth it. Itâs worth it. Itâs...â
With that mantra on a constant loop in my brain, I stood in silence as Portia covered the room in Pixie Dust, chanted some crazy ass spell in a language she called Pixanesican, and did a twirl, a hop, and skip. Clapping her hands over her head as if she was doing a jumping jack, the sound warped the airwaves and in the next half-a-second, an exact doppelganger of me was standing not ten feet away.
Totally amazed and completely freaked out, my mouth dropped open and heart skipped a beat as she opened her mouth and out popped my very own voice. âWhatcha think, Hot Stuff? Good enough to fool the bonehead?â
Unable to speak, I could only nod. It was uncanny. She looked like me, sounded like me, and as scary as it sounds â acted like me.
Throwing her hip out the side, she slapped her hand on my waist â no wait, her waist...my waist... Okay. Hang on. It was her waist. (Whew! Talk about confused.) Tucking her hand on her waist, she shrugged, âLetâs get this show on the road. Your sense of style sucks and your hair is super boring.â
Letting her criticism go unchecked because she was helping, â for the first time since Iâd met her and according to my sisters, the first time ever â I gave a quick nod. Clearing my throat, I finally found my voice and with as much humility as I had sincerely showed my gratitude. âThank you, Portia. Iâll never be able to repay your kindness.â
Again with the rolling of the eyes, only this time I got a first-hand look at what others saw when I was being bitchy and I didnât like it at all, the Pixie gave me a flick of her fingers and sassed, âOh hell no, Witchy Poo. No gettinâ soft on me now We ainât friends and we ainât partners. I just wanna save my little friends in there. Everybody else in icing on the cake and helping you ainât nuthinâ but a thang.â (Yep. Portia got gangsta every once in a while. Itâs funny as all get out.
